Hold Fast Apologetics

What Does Scripture Say?

“A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line.” — C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can’t really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.” — attributed to Elisabeth Elliot

Before we can test what is true or good, we need a standard by which to test it. If God exists—if He is the Creator and the source of truth, goodness, and life—then we are not the standard… He is.

And if God has spoken, His Word is the straight edge by which our thoughts, assumptions, and beliefs are examined—not something we bend to conform to ourselves.

We don’t bend the ruler to match the crooked line… We bring the line—the quote, teaching, thought, or claim—to the ruler.

“Test everything; hold fast what is good.”

— 1 Thessalonians 5:21
