Henny Penny (or Chicken Little) tells the story of a well-meaning hen who mistakes a single falling acorn for a falling sky. Swept up in panic, she gathers a group of loyal friends to warn the king. Yet because those friends mistook passive agreement for true loyalty, no one stopped to check the facts—and their unquestioning solidarity led them directly into the fox’s den.
Friends, we won’t always get it right. Every one of us will be like Henny Penny at points in our lives—panicking over something we read or heard without checking to make sure it’s true. At other times, we’ll be like her friends—running along with the crowd just to keep the peace, choosing quiet compliance or courageous action.
But getting it wrong in the past shouldn’t stop us from gently and respectfully examining truth claims today. We will all make mistakes along the way, but it’s never unkind to care about someone enough to lovingly test what they’ve heard.
True friends love us enough to ask hard questions and examine the facts alongside us, sticking by our side even when our pride gets a little bruised in the process.
