Lamentations 3

“But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
‘therefore I will hope in him.’”
— Lamentations 3:21-24

Lamentations is a book found in the Old Testament which details the author’s (likely, Jeremiah) heartbreak re the invasion of Jerusalem by Babylon. The writer pens, with raw honesty, his acknowledgment that God reigns over every detail, and that he has difficulty understanding why the destruction of his city has occurred.

“My eyes fail from weeping,
I am in torment within;
my heart is poured out on the ground
because my people are destroyed,
because children and infants faint
in the streets of the city.” (v11)

The writer doesn’t hold back. He’s transparent. But he also doesn’t stay in that place of discouragement— he “calls to mind” what has been written down about God in the Hebrew Scriptures. He allows truth to lead his emotions. He remembers that God’s love is both steadfast and true (eg. in how God has interacted with His creation throughout history).

Friends, no matter what comes our way today (at home, at work, etc.)— let’s acknowledge God by being honest with Him, by asking earnest questions of Him, and then by calling to mind what is true about Him (Pr 3:5-6; Ps 62:8; Romans 15:4). We need truth to lead.
